Giridih is an emerging city in the state of Jharkhand. The name of the city Giridih is inspired by the Hills surrounding the place. The city of Giridh was part of Hazaribagh district before the year 1972. The city is home to the famous and prestigious institute known as Indian statistical institute.The city is bestowed with several tourist spots and is a must visit place in Jharkhand. With the passage of time, the city has seen many significant developments in administration, utility services, tourism and infrastructure.

Brief History of Giridih

About GiridihGiridih was previously part of the district called Hazaribagh. The city is located in Chota Nagpur Plateau. The entire region is covered by dense forest vegetation and hill locks. The region is inhabited by several tribal communities residing since ages. Prior to the independence the regions was part of Hazaribagh. Mundas were the traditional rulers of this tribal land. The land remained unexplored until the Mughal emperor Akbar came into power in 1556 A.D. After the succession of Akbar the region became part of Mughal empire. Entire Jharkhand alongwith Hazaribagh was known then referred as Khukra . Later in early 18th century, the region was included in the British controlled district of Hazaribagh. The city has been part of Southwest Frontier Agency under the British rule for a long time. Later in 1854 the name Southwest Frontier Agency was changed to Chota Nagpur. Geography & Climate of Giridih

Giridih is surrounded by dense forest and is located on Central and Lower Plateaus. The Western part of the region of Giridih is located on the Central plateau. The lower Plateau is comprised of undulating surface with average height of 1300 feet. The Northern portion of the lower plateau is mainly known for the table lands. The plateau maintains the height of 1300 feet until it reaches the ghats where the average height is 700 feet. The region is covered with dense vegetation especially by Sal and Teak forests. Other commonly found species are Simul, Bamboo, Palas, Mahua, Kusum, Asan Piar, Kend and Bhelwa. Barakar and Sakri Rivers flows through Giridih and contributes immensely in the biodiversity of the region.

Giridih is a mineral rich region and is bestowed with the best quality coal mines. The mineral rich land also posses high availability of Mica. The blocks Tisri and Gawan are highly rich in ores and minerals that are used by government of India . The climatic condition in the region is generally dry. The most pleasant time to spend in the region is during the winters. Summers are mainly hot and humid. During the month of May, sometime the temperate rises up to 47 degree Celsius. The region experiences monsoon during the month of June. Giridih is situated at 24.18°N 86.3°E. It has an average altitude of 289 meters (948 ft). Population of Giridih

According the census report in 2011, the total population of Giridih District was approximately 19, 01,564. The city is emerging slowly and is the 8th largest city in Jharkhand. The males in the region contributes to 53% of the population where as the female contributes to 47 % of the population. The region has over all 69 % of literacy rate with 74% of male are literate and 63% of females are educated. Around 15 % of the total population is under 6 year of age.

After Independence the Giridih Railway station came under Indian railways and now it severs as a main gateway for Jain pilgrims visiting Parasnath temple in the region. Giridih Railway Station comes under Eastern Railway Zone of Indian Railways. The city is well connected with both state capital Ranchi and national capital New Delhi. Giridih lies on the junction of NH-2 and NH-100 roads and Grand Trunk road passes through the city. The city owns a bus terminus which is connected to other state terminus. Several government and private buses run regularly between the terminus and connects the districts. The city is also well connected with some major airports in Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Giridih is one of the fastest emerging cities in the State of Jharkhand. During 1960-1970 the city emerged as the hub of mineral extraction. The mica and raw minerals was exported to USSR led to tremendous growth of mineral manufacturing industries in the region.
